Our “Selfie” Culture

So this probably speaks to my age but I did not know what a “Selfie” was until 2 weeks ago. A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. According to the Social Media pundits, a selfie allows us to express ourselves and freeze and share our thinnest slices of life. They go on to say “In selfies, we can be famous, and in control of our own images and story lines”. On Instagram alone, if you check these tags – #selfiesunday or #selfie or #me, there are roughly 23 Million photos uploaded daily.

Personal opinion: It is my personal opinion that this new culture of “selfie’s” is deeply rooted in an identify crisis. Did you know  – teen suicide rates, depression and anxiety breakdowns are up? I believe the god of this age, is using the same tactics he used in the garden of Eden to steal, kill and destroy. Truth be told – the church is not immune to this effect. In fact, if we are honest with ourselves, I think our lives and the things we do in the social media world reflect this #selfie culture. Even in ministry, it feels like we’re all building our own kingdoms instead of HIS Kingdom. Words like #influence, #leadership, #drive and #relevant seems to be invading our lives. We want to be signficant in some way. It’s becoming my “thing”. I will be the first one to confess today before the Lord that I need His grace and Spirit to rid me of my selfish ambitions and wicked heart. We need to recognize the influence this culture is having on us, our families, our churches, our ministries and everything God has given us.

What are your thoughts? Is this a common phenomenon? Do you see this problem differently? And, finally, what are some things we can do individually and collectively to combat this identity crisis and this cultural trend?
